Seascapes & Icebergs – Newfoundland Photography Workshop

I’m a firm believer in never offering up workshops to places I’ve never visited because I believe that local knowledge is a vital part of the service but I’m breaking that rule for this event. This is where Gord Follett comes to the rescue.

Not only is Gord a great photographer (see his images on this page), but as a Newfoundlander Gord has an intimate knowledge of the landscape, the angles of light, and of course where to find those dramatic icebergs. This will be my first time visiting Newfoundland and I’m beyond excited to witness first-hand some of the spectacular locations that Gord has photographed, I mean, just look at Gord’s photos.

Why Newfoundland?

Aside from Newfoundland offering a great opportunity to photograph icebergs, the dramatic coastal cliffs, and beaches offer world-class seascapes and moody landscapes that you know I just love.

While we cannot guarantee the icebergs will show up, we’ve scheduled this Newfoundland photo workshop to coincide with seasonal conditions that give us a great chance of witnessing icebergs. Even if the icebergs don’t show up, we’ve planned an itinerary that boasts some truly impressive coastal scenery that in the right light could offer up some ‘portfolio-worthy’ shots.

Itinerary – How To Get There

Book your flight to St John’s, Newfoundland, and arrange your own pre-workshop accommodation. We will pick you up from your St John’s hotel/bnb on the morning of May 9th which is when the workshop begins. From that point on we’ll be taking care of your next 5 nights of accommodation (9th, 10th, 11th,12th, and 13th) and driving you to all of the shoots. When the workshop ends on May 14th, we’ll drop you off at your St John’s hotel/bnb after our last shoot (Don’t forget to book your accommodation for the 14th).

If you plan on staying far from St John’s you’ll need to get yourself to St John’s on May 9th so that we don’t waste any time getting to our first shoot.

I highly recommend that you rent a car for a few more days after the workshop so that you can do more exploring. You might even want to revisit some of the workshop shoots multiple times under different lighting conditions. You’ve come all this way so why not spoil yourself and stay a little bit longer?

Where to Stay Before or After The Workshop

St John’s is the biggest city in Newfoundland so you’ll find many accommodation options using the following online booking services:

Fitness Requirements

Most of our shooting locations require only moderate walks of around 20 minutes or less. We’re not climbing any mountains but it is your responsibility to ensure you are able to safely walk up a mild hill without the need for a defibrillator.

  • Recommended: Wide angle lens, mid-long, and telephoto lens.
  • Recommended: A polarizing filter, ND filters
  • Many spare batteries for your camera.
  • Good hiking boots

Why USD and not CAD?

Historically, most of my clients are in the US and around the world. Very few come from Canada, so I’ve set USD as the web sites base currency to accommodate the majority. In my 20+ years of doing e-commerce, USD seems to be the more globally ‘recognized’ currency for e-commerce. People from different countries are more used to seeing prices in USD than CAD so that’s what I went with. One day I’ll figure out how to add multi-currency to the site. That being said, you can still choose the ‘Paypal’ payment option and Paypal should convert the total into your local currency.
