For this Glencoe photography workshop I’ve teamed up with my good friend Blake Rudis (of F64 Academy) so that you’ll have two photography instructors to help you capture the best that the highlands has to offer.

The Scottish Highlands – Home Of Legends

Allow Blake, Amanda and I to take you on a journey through time. Bring a rain jacket because we hope the weather will be miserable. Glencoe and the surrounding area offers a wealth of iconic locations and they look their best during the ugliest of weather.

This 4-day photography workshop in Scotland will be equal parts visual feast and cultural experience. All you’ve got to do is get yourself to the Glencoe/Ballachulish/Fort William area and join our adventure.

Only 15 Participants Join The Fun

With two photography instructors (Gavin & Blake + Amanda) you’ll get plenty of dedicated tuition at each location.

In the event of hellish weather (blue skies) both Blake and I are more than happy to share our post-processing knowledge over a flat-white and some haggis while we wait for the weather to improve. Be sure to bring your laptop just in case we get the opportunity to sit down and work on some post-processing. It’s also a great idea to bring plenty of your images if you’d like us to give you a constructive critique of your portfolio.

The good news is that even during a deluge of rain, Glencoe is still breath-takingly beautiful.

Kilchurn Castle, Loch Awe - Isle of Skye Photography Workshop

Buachaille Etive Mòr

This is perhaps the most impressive looking mountain in the glen and when the river is flowing there are many photo opportunities for waterfalls under that imposing peak. Just be sure to bring your mud boots.

The Three Sisters

‘The Three Sisters’ is perhaps the most iconic grouping of peaks in Glencoe and they look fantastic from all angles. We’ll take you directly to the prime spots to take in this legendary vista.

Moody Castle Ruins

Scotland has more than it’s fair share of castle ruins and it’s a fact that the ancient Scots had an eye for the dramatic as many of these castles are nestled amid some spectacular landscapes. It’s almost as if they knew that future generations of artists would come to pay homage to their wisdom and foresight.

The Jacobite Steam Train (Hogwarts Express)

Glenfinnan is a beautiful landscape in itself but when you add in the viaduct that carries the Jacobite Steam Train it takes your photo opportunities to the next level.

How it Works

In a nutshell, you’re on a 4 day shoot with Gavin, Blake and Amanda. That means that the itinerary above is subject to change based on weather and light conditions.

Our goal is to get you the best shots possible during our workshop so be prepared to work with a fluid itinerary that helps us achieve that goal.

Fitness Requirements

Most of our shooting locations require very little hiking except for the optional hikes overlooking Buachaille Etive Mòr (1 hr, 20 mins – shown above) and ‘The Fairy Bridge’ (30 mins). Everything else is a short stroll from the car park but may involve uneven ground. The benefit of having two instructors is that we can split up the group for those that wish to take on the hikes while those that don’t can enjoy the easier access locations.

How to Get There and Where to Stay

Visitors will typically fly to Glasgow or Edinburgh. Glencoe is a beautiful 2 to 3 hour drive from either city and offers spectacular scenery for much of the pleasant drive. We would also recommend spending at least an extra day in the lovely city of Edinburgh.

Near Glencoe you can find lots of accommodation but you’ll need to book early. Either Airbnb, hotels.com, expedia.com or booking.com should yield some good results if you book early enough. As we’ll be travelling all over the Highlands there is no one ‘central location’ but if you choose accommodation in areas like Glencoe, Ballachulish and Fort William you won’t be too far away from some of the best shooting locations.

You’ll need a vehicle to get to all the shooting locations. You can rent a vehicle from the airport when you land. If you’d like to carpool once in Glencoe, we’ll do our best to help but please note that transportation is NOT included in the price of your workshop.
