Focus Stacking Tutorials – Download Now

In this photography course I teach you the entire process of focus stacking your landscape photography images so that you can create hyper-real landscapes with amazing sharpness from the immediate foreground right into the far distance.

These focus stacking tutorials aren’t just about post processing, I also take you out on location to show you three different shooting methods of capturing your focus-stacked frames so that you’ll be set up for success when you try this for yourself.

The first adventure is a strenuous hike to Sgorr Tuath (The best view in Scotland) where I demonstrate manual focus stacking with the help of ‘focus peaking‘. I then show you how I put this all together in Photoshop in a series of high quality 4K videos.

The second adventure takes us to a popular Scottish castle where I demonstrate both the ‘incremental focus rack‘ and the ‘hopscotch method‘ of shooting the same image.

This is more challenging because it features a foreground element that continues from our immediate foreground into the distance (a common problem when shooting focus stacked images). Once again, I show you how I prepare the RAW files and put the focus stack together in Photoshop.

The third and final adventure is an extreme situation in the arctic conditions of Nova Scotia during a January ice-storm. This demonstration gives you a ‘worst case scenario’ where the conditions are so cold and painful that the best shooting method to use is ‘automatic focus bracketing‘ in order to capture the required frames as quickly as possible under the real threat of frostbite.

Once again, I show you how I put the focus stack together in Photoshop and easily repair the common problems that you’re likely to encounter yourself.

Helicon Focus Pro Tutorial

I also show you a much simpler method of focus stacking the same image using some software called Helicon Focus Pro. You’ll still need a RAW file editor like ACR or Lightroom to prepare your images for stacking in Helicon Focus Pro but in my opinion the user interface and logic of Helicon Focus Pro is much easier to learn and the results are just as good as doing it in Photoshop.
